The 2010 Fise

Pat Panakos | Events, Uncategorized

Back again for 2010, the FISE blew away the European public with some of the best rail riding in the world. With a similar course to last year, the Sesitec System 2 was once again brought in to be the tow apparatus of choice for an event like this. With 2 System 2′s in action, the riders had the chance to hit both sides of the rail park to lay down their best runs. With riders coming from all over the world, all the best rail riders in the wakeboarding industry turned out for the event. Returning this year was last years winner, Keith Lidberg, who dominated the event in 2009. Other notable athletes were Kevin Henshaw, Oliver Derome and Marc Rossiter from the UK. (more…)

Launch of the John Wayne “M-Gap” Rail

Matt Hickman | Events, Uncategorized

Wake Park Project John Wayne Rail

Every year the Triple-S grows, both in athlete participation and excitement, as well as in the event itself, the parties and the REAL Slider Park. This year, John Wayne Cancer Foundation stepped up to the plate and launched a new rail into the park that redefined the standard for kiteboarding obstacles worldwide. This new rail was built by The Wake Park Project in Florida, constructed with welded aluminum and covered in HDPE (high density polyethylene). Basically, it is going to last longer than any of us reading this article AND it is perfectly designed, a true work of genius!  The new John Wayne rail is 82’ feet long and features a removable gap section in the middle, so it can be set up as an “A-Frame” or a “M-Gap Rail”. To see it in the water brings only jaw dropping awe….

Wake Park Project John Wayne "M-Gap" Rail

The only thing even close to the experience of seeing the JWCF in the water is looking at a 100’ maxi ocean racing sailboat pulling out of Newport to set a new Transatlantic record. It’s that tight, that powerful and that perfect. The new John Wayne rail means business and from the second it was delivered to REAL (on two flat bed trucks driving thru the night from Florida) the Triple-S athletes were drooling!

New Wake the Line Video!

Matt Hickman | Events, Uncategorized

Red Bull North America has recently been throwing down the most progressive contests in wake sports. The same is true in Europe. Red Bull Germany with the help from our friends at Sesitec Cable Systems put on one of the sickest contests to date, Red Bull Wake the Line. Wake park obstacles and features were built between three olympic size pools. The highlight of the comp definitely was the quarter pipe at the end of the third pool. It’s crazy to think the last quarter pipe a wakeboarder hit (which was also the first in wake) was built in 2001 for the Carnival contest at The Projects Wakeboard and Wakeskate Camp. The difference this time was a Sesitec System 2.0 straight-line cable pulling the contest. So instead of edging in and letting go, the riders held on to the handle, hit the quarter pipe and rode back out. It was an amazing contest that really showed the direction our sport should head.

Keith Lidberg Dominates Red Bull Wake the Line With Sesitec’s System 2.0 Cable

Matt Hickman | Events, Uncategorized

The season opening for European Wakeboarding couldn’t have been better. At Red Bull Wake The Line more than 7,000 spectators saw incredible wakeboard action on a new level performed by top riders from all over the world. The obstacle setup included a massive quarterpipe at the end of the run and offered a platform for tricks never seen before in wakeboarding. Towed by Sesitec’s System 2.0 straight-line cable, the four pools in the stadionbad of Cologne made a total of 320 meters of wake heaven. In the superfinal, Keith Lidberg showed the best performance, winning ahead of Germany’s Bernhard Hinterberger and Shawn Watson (USA). (more…)

Red Bull Wake Lab Theory Proven Again With Sesitec’s System 2.0 Cable System and Floating Wake Park

Matt Hickman | Events, Uncategorized, Wake Park Update

Red Bull Wake Lab, the biggest and most innovative wakeboarding event ever devised, splashed down in Tempe Town Lake during the Circle K Tempe Music Festival on April 3rd and 4th.  Over two days, more than 25,000 spectators experienced some of the nation’s top wakeboarders showing off their best tricks on the “Wake Lab,” a one-of-a-kind floating cable wake park designed by Pat Panakos and towed by two Sesitec System 2.0′s setup side-by-side.

The first day of competition got off to a rocky start as 50 mph gusts of wind caused two of the qualifying rounds to be postponed.  But Saturday brought clear skies and calm winds, and an early start allowed the event to get right back on track.  At the end of a day of tight competition, four riders walked away with awards – Aaron Rathy (Most Progressive), Adam Errington (Best Trick), Parks Bonifay (Best Line) and JD Webb (Best Overall).

“Red Bull Wake Lab Tempe was hands-down the best wakeboarding event I’ve ever participated in,” said wakeboarding pro JD Webb. “From the perfect weather to the huge, supportive crowd and the amazing, challenging structure, I was happy to just be involved, let alone win ‘Best Overall.’”

The 36 competing athletes were a combination of pros hand-selected by Parks Bonifay, X Games Gold medalist and event co-creator, along with up-and-coming riders from across the country who competed in regional qualifiers to earn their spot in the event.

Red Bull Wake Lab made its debut in Orlando, FL in September 2008, and was an instant success with riders and fans alike.  Created as an experiment to see how far the boundaries of the sport of wakeboarding could be pushed, the groundbreaking event seeks to “evolve” the sport of wakeboarding. Influenced by the design of the modern skateboarding skate park and snowboarding snow park, a massive cable wake park was specially designed with the goal of taking wakeboarding somewhere it had never been before.  The result, dubbed “The Wake Lab,” allows riders to perform sets of tricks that were once impossible, raising the sport to new levels.

In order to evolve the sport and create new experiences for riders, a new technology needed to be introduced to take full advantage of the revolutionary wake park structure.  This came to fruition when the “The Wake Lab” was coupled with the Sesitec System 2.0 overhead cable system courtesy of The Wake Park Project.  No boats are needed to tow the wakeboarders, as this revolutionary cable system allows athletes to take two full runs (back and forth) across the wake park’s various rails, pools, sliders and 15-foot wall. The system made its US competition debut at Red Bull Wake Lab in Orlando.

Updated Athlete List and Schedule for Red Bull Wake Lab 2009 Featuring Sesitec’s System 2.0

Matt Hickman | Events, Interviews, Uncategorized

On April 3 and 4, the city of Tempe will play host to the biggest and most innovative wakeboarding event ever devised as Red Bull Wake Lab descends smack dab in the middle of Tempe Town Lake. Created as an experiment to see how far the boundaries of the sport of wakeboarding could be pushed, the groundbreaking event will take place in conjunction with the Circle K Tempe Music Festival. Influenced by the design of the modern skateboarding skate park and snowboarding snow park, a massive wakeboarding wake park was constructed to include a mix of hand rails and transfer rails, ramps, an elevated floating pool and a 16-foot high quarterpipe. The result, a massive floating skate park, dubbed “The Wake Lab,” allows riders to perform sets of tricks that were once impossible, raising the sport to never-before-seen levels. And don’t expect to see any boats on the lake towing the riders; a revolutionary cable pulley system, the Sesitec System 2.0, will tow athletes back and forth across the lake and the Wake Lab’s various rails, pools, ramps and quarterpipe courtesy of The Wake Park Project.

Competing Red Bull Wake Lab Athlete Bios:

Parks Bonifay

Discipline: Wakeboarding
Hometown: Lake Alfred, FL
Residence: Clermont, FL

- Set a Guinness world record at 6 months as the youngest person to ever to water ski

- Has a koi fish named Billy Ocean

- Part owner of Ronix wakeboards

In 1996, Parks Bonifay won the inaugural wakeboard competition at the X Games. He was 14 and hasn’t stopped pushing the limits since. Known for combining flawless old-school technique with radical, 21st century creativity, he just keeps getting better and better. Parks is the first rider to be captured on film stomping a 1080 and the only rider to throw the double-back roll cab mobe. He has taken wakeboarding to both the tropic and the arctic—throwing down jibs on icebergs off the coast of Canada and pulling into one of the world’s most notorious surf breaks at Teahupoo, Tahiti – on his wakeboard! He is a five-time Pro Tour champion and was Wake Boarding magazine’s Rider of the Year in 2003 and 2004. With his fearless exploration into the uncharted frontiers of ocean wakeboarding, he’s leading the progression of his sport, a story that will be told in the documentary chronicling Parks’ evolution due out in 2009.

Adam Errington

Discipline: Wakeboarding
Hometown: Orlando, Florida

- Born in Ullapool, Scotland

- Gets his adrenaline rush from bungee jumping and skydiving

- Won U.S. Nationals in 2005 with broken ribs

Adam Errington takes his role as one of wakeboarding’s fastest-rising stars in stride. The 2007 Rookie of the Year improved his competitive and creative edge to finish 2008 ranked fourth overall in the Pro Wakeboard Tour standings. If the rapid success brings increased expectation and anxiety, Adam doesn’t feel it. “I’m the type of person who does well under pressure,” the 20-year-old says. “I don’t get stressed out. I like competition.” And competition likes him. In 2008, Adam racked up podiums, including third at the Wake Games and first at Wakestock in the United Kingdom. When not competing, he has appeared in videos like Red Bull’s Blackout and Sean Kilgus’ Drive, traveled to Australia and Panama, and taken up skydiving. This season, Adam hopes his relaxed and smooth riding style will garner him a top-three spot on the Pro Tour as well as more videos and photo shoots.

JD Webb

Discipline: Wakeboarding
Hometown: Anna Marie Island, FL
Residence: Auburndale, FL

- Featured on Discovery Channel’s Stunt Junkies

- Was given the key to the city of Orlando, FL

- 2008 Rail Rider of the Year

Wakeboarder J.D. Webb has already won some of the biggest prizes in wakeboarding and holds a world record for biggest gap jump on a wakeboard— more than 70 feet over the Lake Eola fountain in Orlando—but he’s already got his eyes set on bigger prizes. For starters, this 2004 Rookie of the Year wants to take Rider of the Year honors from his friend and mentor Danny Harf, and he’d like to claim the Pro Tour title on his way there. “My first goal is the same as it ever was—to help the progression of wakeboarding, whether it’s inventing new tricks, getting new people into the sport, or taking down the Pro Tour title, and to just really ride my best all year,” says J.D.

Slingshot Endorses Sesitec’s System 2.0 as “Innovation of the Year!”

Matt Hickman | Cable System Info, Events, Wake Park Update

A few years ago, we made a trip down to Florida, to “roll” out our new wakeboards and boots.  It was a pretty big time launch. Ha ha!  It consisted of going to the Projects to let their crew check the stuff out.  It was the first time we met Pat Panakos and Robby Jacques.  So we show up unannounced.  Robby had already secretly hooked up with Jeff McKee  and put the product through the usual test, rails, wake to wake, basically doing everything he could to break it and see where Slingshot was coming in with regards to overall performance.   He was freaking on the goods but was riding for another company at the time, so he played it cool on the “DL”.  I knew eventually we would get him on the stuff.   I could see it in his eyes.  No way he could go back to an old construction. It was just a matter of time before he evolved.  Cool with us.  Anyway, Pat rolls up and introduces himself, and says. “Are you guys from another planet. This stuff  (gear) has been in my head, and without ever talking, or meeting  before, you show up and here it is right in front of me.  In real life!“  We took that as a huge innovation compliment.  We thrive on innovating cool stuff. So leap forward, a couple years. I would run into Pat and Matt Hickman at certain industry events, boats shows, etc.  Both were always super cool and relaxed. This is when boat sales were diving and gas was over 4 bucks a gallon. I always thought what’s up?  These guys are so laid back, yet everyone else is pinning.  Unknown to me, they were secretly so far ahead of the curve.  Why pin when you have the biggest thing to hit wakeboarding since the boat?  Jump forward to Surf Expo 08. They launch the Sesitec System 2.0 with the Red Bull Wake lab event.  They killed it! But other than a few top pro’s… who had really put this new cable to the test?  What was the word on the street?  Well when you have a industry changing innovation, word spreads fast.  It has and it’s good.  The Wake Park Project put one out at the Projects.  More pro’s got a chance to check it out.  Still good, no I mean great feedback.  We instantly thought, “What’s better than a Sesitec [System] 2.0?  How about two of them?!”  Our team guys were so blown away, we hooked up with The Wake Park Project and  helped set up number 2 over the Slingshot 100’ flat bar.  Photographers, video guys, and riders are all going nuts this winter at the Projects. You can start finding shots and video at WakeBoarding magazine and Alliance magazine.  More important is more of these cables could be going up in your area.

So what’s the prediction? Well we predict this cable will revolutionize wakeboarding.   Or should we say, create real “rail parks”. Why?  It’s cost effective.  Now, I’m no math expert, but It seems like you can get one of these for the price of a cheap wake boat.  Two of them for a good boat, and three of them for the price of a boat that is all decked out, like the kind wakeboarders you see that don’t actually wakeboard own  (you know the  type.)  And that’s the good news for boat manufactures. They still have their customer base because those people don’t wakeboard anyway. But if you are into riding you have to recognize the innovation as stellar.  Here more why.  It’s a smart system.  It’s portable, you’re not locked in to a riding location forever.  We could see the local neighbors pitching in 5G’s each and family sharing these things. When your kid goes off to college, you just sell your shares to the new family that move in down the street.  Or if that’s not in the cards, there will be one somewhere close to where you live.   You don’t have to dig a ditch, or you could, but that’s up to you.  You can pull it down during hurricane season.  You can pop it up in the winter and hit rails on your snowboard.  Look for one in the Chicago scene.  Camps will teach better and riders will learn faster.  You don’t need a jet ski or a driver. Let’s admit it that era was kind of gay anyway. Sesitec System 2.0 kills it! In short it offers a lot of options that are all well thought out.  It makes the future of rail parks a reality.

So how does it ride? “It’s like hanging out at the skate park with all your friends. It’s a solid pull without all the noise of an engine; Just the sweet whispering of your wakes. System 2 eliminates almost all of the downtime you deal with using alternate towing devices so you’re riding more and waiting less. It’s by far the # 1 solution for riding small bodies of water, rail parks and no wake zones…(although you may want to check with the authorities first) haha. My name is Jeff McKee and I approve this message because I care about wakeboarders worldwide. Ski ya later!” - Jeff McKee. That’s all we need because, all the other team guys were still frothing at the mouth, so we could not really get decent quotes.

As innovators ourselves, we recognize the effort by The Wake Park Project to bring this innovation to the masses. Good work Matt and Pat! We only have one question. “Are you guys from another planet?”

Red Bull Wake Lab Hypothesis Proven At Lake Eola In Orlando

September 13, 2008

A crowd of 22,000 gathered in downtown Orlando at Lake Eola to witness 24 wakeboarders innovate the sport at Red Bull Wake Lab. This groundbreaking wakeboarding competition was the U.S. debut for The Wake Park Project and Sesitec’s cable system technology System 2.0. The new system and course design amazed the crowd and challenged riders to push each other to create as many unique runs which utilized all surfaces of the “wakepark.”

YouTube Preview Image

Red Bull Wake Lab’s course elements included an elevated pool, hand rails and sliders inspired by skate and snow parks. The judges reflected the hybrid wakepark course design and included freestyle snowboarder Pat Moore, Skate Park of Tampa’s Ryan Clements, in addition to wakeskater Brian Grubb and wake industry veterans Shawn Perry and Chris Bischoff.

With the city skyline serving as the backdrop, Red Bull Wake Lab brought the sport of wakeboarding to the masses. “It was awesome to see so many people turn out to watch Red Bull Wake Lab,” said JD Webb. “Red Bull made our ideas possible and helped innovate the sport tonight. This was by far the best event I’ve ever participated in.”

While the wakeboarders took center stage, DJ Swamp wowed the crowd with his turntable skills and pyrotechnic display and the Red Bull Air Force skydived into Lake Eola to kickoff the event.

This year has been a great opportunity to start looking at some innovative ways to grow our sport. The more people that ride, the better chance we have at keeping wake on the cutting edge of action sports.

That’s why The Wake Park Project has teamed up with cable manufacturer Sesitec to create the System 2.0, a straight-line cable system that’s not only affordable, it’s also portable, making it perfect for events, festivals and rail parks.

This two-tower cable system is the only system on the market that allows a continuous ride, giving beginners and advanced riders alike the tools they need to become avid watersports enthusiasts and bring the industry to a whole new level.

The System 2.0 could be the perfect tool for every dealer to bring new, local riders to their shop for weekend events, demos and lessons. But we don’t want you to take our word for it. We want you to see the System 2.0 in action and try it for yourself.

Learn About It
Stop by our booth at Surf Expo, September 12-14 at the Orlando Convention Center to see photos, videos, and  speak to one of our representatives about how the System 2.0 is changing the way we ride, and what it can do for your dealership. We are in the Wake section at booth # 463s. And there are special dealer incentives for reserving a system at the show.

See It
On Saturday night, September 13, the Red Bull Wake Lab will be in full force at Lake Eola Park in downtown Orlando. The System 2.0 will be pulling pro riders over some of the most insane obstacles the sport has ever seen, so come see it in action. Stop by our booth for event details.

Try It
After the Red Bull Wake Lab, the System 2.0’s will make their way to The Projects wake camp, where The Wake Park Project will hold demos to showcase the system’s abilities. Stop by our booth to pick up a ticket to reserve your spot. We want you to be among the first people to experience the ride.

Questions? Good. We like those.

System 2.0 Rocks Wakestock

Matt Hickman | Events

Wakestock 11 kicked off in typical fashion by once again pushing the world’s top pros to the highest level of competition with the biggest and most challenging rail course of the year. “This is the biggest, tech-est course yet”, said long-time Wakestock rail course designer Pat Pankos of Florida’s Wake Park Project. Featuring three massive rails ranging between 90 and 105 feet in length, plus two smaller hits, the challenge was met by several riders. Leading the charge was three-time defending Wakestock rail champion Keith Lidberg of Florida who stomped a near perfect run, followed closely was Canada’s Aaron Rathy.

Friday’s Billabong Railslide heat winners featured an allstar line-up of top pros: Keith Lidberg, Aaron Rathy, Shane Bonifay, Shawn Watson, Colin Harrington, JD Webb, Jimmy Lariche, and Jeff Weatherall. Also qualifying through to the quarter-finals was Rusty Malinoski, Adam Errington, Kevin Henshaw, Erik Ruck, Trevor Hansen, Raphael Derome, Yannick Thibault and Didier Godbout.

In the Malibu Pro Expression Session World Series Qualifier Philip Soven and JD Webb continued their one-two battle from this season’s US Pro Tour with the top two runs of the day. Other heat winners included: Rusty Malinoski, Chad Sharpe, Dean Smith, Daniel Watkins, Trevor Hansen, and Andrew Adkison. Also qualifying through to the Wakestock quater-finals were Aaron Rathy, Tino Santori, Jimmy Lariche, Oliver Derome, Mikey Ennen, Adam Erington, Padiwat Jaemjan, and Raphael Derome.

Generating perhaps the most excitement of the day was the world debut of the new Sesitec System 2.0 portable wake cable system from Germany at the Oakley Wakeskate Pool Jam. This incredible cable system pulled the world’s top wakeskaters out of the Oakley launch pool, down a three rail, 10 stair set out into the wake course and then back to the pool. Beyond elevating pool events to a whole new level the System 2.0 showcased new possibilities for pool events and the whole sport.WAKESTOCK is presented by Bud Light and TELUS; in association with Monster Energy, Malibu Boats, Billabong, Oakley, Xcel, Right Guard Xtreme (RGX), Milk (Dairy Farmers of Canada), PlayStation, Schick Xtreme 3, Gordon Bay Marine, Paris Marine, Yamaha, and Straight Line in partnership with Much Music, 102.1 the Edge, Eye Weekly, The Score, Live Nation, SBC Skateboard Magazine and SBC Wakeboard Magazine.

2008 WWA Wake Park World Championships

Matt Hickman | Events

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 8th, 2008

CAMSUR WATERSPORTS COMPLEX, Philippines – Sunday concluded the 2008 WWA Wakeboard World Championships and the CamSur Rider’s Cup. The 5 day event at the CamSur Watersports Complex in the beautiful province of Camarines Sur in the Philippines included 15 divisions with over 230 riders from 21 countries.

The event had the largest melting pot of riders from all different disciplines of wakeboarding and wakeskating. The Pro Men division behind the cable was the second stop of the 2008 WWA Wake Park World Series, while the CamSur Rider’s Cup behind the boat was the first stop of the 2008 WWA Wakeboard World Series.

On the cable lake, it was Tom Fooshee from the United States who took the victory in a head-to-head heat against Sam Collins of Australia. Sam rode first and set the pace for Tom with a switch melon crow mobe 540 off the kicker, a 515, and a toeside backside 720 off the kicker. Fooshee answered with impeccable rail riding and flats tricks, throwing a toeside backside 720 for himself, a 90210, and a switch toeside backside 450 to switch front board on the transfer box.

Phillip Soven continued his winning streak in 2008 during the CamSur Rider’s Cup on the newly built boat lake at the CamSur Watersports Complex. The lake design allowed for a little different format for a contest with rider’s hitting a double-up in every round after their first pass down the lake. Phillip threw down all weekend behind the boat and landed a toeside 900 off the double up, as well as a melon skeezer 540 and whirly bird 540 in the final round. JD Webb took second place with Keith Lidberg and Trevor Hansen landing in 3rd and 4th respectively.

One of the highlights of the week was the 10 Minute Jam Style format of the Obstacles Only division held on the cable lake. This division included many of the top named cable and boat riders together battling it out on all the rails CWC has to offer. The stage was set as heats of 4 riders would all be on the water at once with 5 judges concentrating on 5 different areas of the course. The format allowed for non-stop excitement for the crowd as everyone was throwing down for the entire 10 minutes.

The Pro Wakeskate division behind the cable was nothing short of an absolute shootout of the World’s top riders. The 6 man final of Leo Labadens of France, Ryan Doyle of Canada, Nick Taylor of the United States, Andy Kolb of Germany, Reed Hansen of the United States, and Bret Little from The Republic of Texas wound up with Nick Taylor in the top spot. The margin of riding between the top 4 riders was incredibly slim.

2008 WWA Wake Park World Series

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The World Wakeboard Association announces event dates and locations for a five stop Wake Park World Series to be held across the globe in 2008. This professional series is the first of its kind, and will continue to open the door for competitive wakeboarding in the wake park segment of the sport. With the success of last year’s domestic wake park series in the United States, the WWA has responded to the broader market with this new series by encompassing Asia and Europe.

“We are extremely excited about the 2008 Wake Park World Series,” says Matt Hickman, VP of the WWA. “Bringing the wake world together through events and creating equal standards that all riders can enjoy is what the WWA is all about; and this global series aligns perfectly with that vision.”
